The Bridge
The argument ended, as it often did, with Mark retreating to the spare room. The air in the small space was stale, heavy with silence. He glared at the closet, where his wife’s clothes hung neatly on one side. His side was a jumble of shirts and pants, many slumped on the floor or draped precariously over the wire hangers he insisted were “perfectly fine.”
He yanked the closet door open, the squeak a protest in the quiet. There, nestled among his own tangled mess of wire, was a single, sturdy wooden hanger. It held one of her elegant blouses, standing with a quiet dignity that shamed the chaos around it. It was a hanger she had clearly placed there for him, a silent, persistent offer of order.
Mark slowly reached out, his fingers brushing the smooth, sanded wood. He thought of her doing the same, choosing this one strong hanger for him. It wasn’t about the blouse. It was a bridge. With a sigh that deflated his anger, he carefully took down the blouse, hung up his own crumpled jacket on the wooden hanger, and went to find his wife. Some peace offerings don’t need words; they just need to hold a little weight.
